Kahlan and sister Dennee attempt to get to the Boundry to go through at give Richard the Book of Counted Shadows. On their journey they must escape from The Quad, a band of soldiers ruled by Darken Rahl. When Dennee is shot, she urges Kahlan to proceed, giving her the book. As Kahlan leaves her sister, she enters the boundry. Four of the Quad follow after her. In Hartland, Woodsguide Richard Cypher spots Kahlan being chased by the Quad
