101 Pirate Radio Hits (4CD Boxset)

Posted on June 13th, 2009

101
This is a great selection of Watery Wireless track’s. I remember this music with great affection from when it was played by the likes of Radio Caroline, Radio London, Radio England etc. There are some tracks that are hardly, if ever heard these days. So this set of discs is a must for all the fans of the good old Offshore Radio days of the 60’s. Included here are “Caroline” by The Fortunes and “We Love The Pirates” by The Roaring Sixties

The Monkees: Headquarters Sessions (3CD Boxset)

Posted on April 23rd, 2009

Monkees
In 1967, The Monkees found themselves at RCA Studio C in Hollywood as a working band. And the album they were about to create, Headquarters, would be released on May 20, 1967; a month later it would hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and remain in the Top Ten for almost three months. The Monkees Headquarters Sessions is an 84-track 3-CD set which contains 60 previously unreleased recordings and which also includes the complete original mono mixes of the album on compact disc for the first time anywhere. Researched and compiled by longtime Monkee maniacs Andrew Sandoval and Bill Inglot, Headquarters Sessions collects almost four hours of unique audio insight into the recording of this Monkee milestone. It includes almost three-and-one-half-hours of alternate takes, demos, backing tracks, and recording session audio hijinx never before preserved on compact disc

101
Yet another album from the 101 series of music boxsets.  This time around this one was brought out for Mother’s Day.  It’s meant to contain all the various songs that one would associate with housework. It contains a wealth of hits though, the likes of Frank Sinatra, The Bangles, The Archies, The Proclaimers, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Manfred Mann and many more

Gram Parsons: The Complete Reprise Sessions (3CD Boxset)

Posted on March 4th, 2009

Gram Parsons
Singer-songwriter Gram Parsons, the architect of country-rock and patron saint of American roots music—”alt” and otherwise—died in 1973 at age 26, but the enormity of his influence remains constant. Florida-born and Georgia-bred,Parsons began playing at age 14 and launched his first group, the International Submarine Band, in NYC in the late ‘60s. Transplanted to L.A., he joined the Byrds, shaping their landmark album Sweetheart of The Rodeo, and made further musical history with the Flying Burrito Brothers. After discovering Emmylou Harris playing in a D.C. bar, he went on to record two now-legendary solo LPs, GP and Grievous Angel, that spotlight the peerless harmony of their divergent voices, hers angelic and pure, his ragged and scorched by his demons. Rhino’s historic set presents those two soulful albums remastered and expanded, plus a third disc of precious alternate takes from those recordings

Little Richard: The Complete Reprise Recordings (3CD Boxset)

Posted on March 4th, 2009

Little Richard
Little Richard fans and R & R historians can say it’s been a long time comin’ - a new LR album: the ‘72 Southern Child, among three originally released Reprise albums and three miscellaneous sessions. His last studio album was a collection of remakes apparently released only outside the USA in 1994 so this 3 CD-set makes a proud entrance. Those who love ’50s-style uptempo will not enthuse over this set as a whole - there are certainly a number of fast-rockin’ numbers featuring the characteristic shoutin’ and piano poundin’: what is mainly offered here is a (still under-appreciated) artist in a very creative period. Indeed, the choice of material, arrangement, and instrumentation might suprise even the most ardent fan. And, most importantly, on several tracks we encounter a great singer at the top of his game

Frank Sinatra: The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings (20CD Boxset)

Posted on March 2nd, 2009

Frank Sinatra
This is a mammoth collection of every studio recording Sinatra made for Reprise. Songs you know well and some stuff you haven’t heard in years or at all. Frank Sinatra is the greatest singer of all time and nobody interpereted a lyric better. Arguably his Capital output was the highlight of his recording career, but he took so many chances at Reprise(after all he owned the label) and while there are some misses, the hits certainly outnumber the filler stuff. I just bought this collection and I’ve been listening to a CD each day. To hear all this music in chronological order really gives you the depth and scope of Sinatra through the years. This may be the greatest CD boxset ever, over 452 tracks in total
