The second of ten CDs of previously unknown and privately recorded Bud Powell performances released by his friend Francis Paudras has a variety of rewarding and fairly exciting renditions. Most of the selections (from 1953 and 1955) are with trios (often matching the pianist with bassist Oscar Pettiford and Art Blakey or Roy Haynes on drums) but there is a rare outing with a big band ("Big Band Blues") and two selections ("Woody'n You" and "Salt Peanuts") with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach that are listed as being recorded at the famous Massey Hall concert in 1953; the year is right but the location is probably wrong since that concert was fully documented by the Debut label. Bud Powell fanatics are advised to search for all ten of the Mythic Sound releases although more general listeners should pick and choose; this is not one of the most essential ones. ~ Scott Yanow
This CD release is part of what was a limited edition 11 LP set. The source material was in the possession of Bud's great friend and benefactor Francis Paudras and was given by him to Bud's daughter Cecilia. The original LP source was a limited edition (1000 copies) set that saw production thanks to the efforts of some Italian Jazzanistas, of whom Giacomo Battistella - founder of the excellent Black Saint label - was a motivating power.
This is Volume 2 of what I believe to be 10. I also have Volumes 3, 8, 9 and 10 aside from this and will be sure to post them.
The liner notes/memoirs are excellent, but the discographical info is an abomination. For example, the first track is said to be recorded at Birdland, but it is clearly an appearance on the Steve Allen Show, although Bud was apparently in residence at Birdland at the time.
